Help:

How do I view a layer?
-
In the legend, single-click on the folder that contains it if the folder
isn't open. Then click on the name of the layer; click again to hide
it. (Double-click on the name to also get information about it.)
-
You can also double-click on a folder to view all layers within it; double-click
again to hide them all.
-
How do I zoom?
-
Click on the + icon, move your cursor to the spot you want to zoom in on,
and click.
-
To zoom out, click on the - icon.
-
What does the * on the folder name mean?
-
That a layer it contains is highlighted.
-
How do I see information about locations on the map?
-
Run your mouse over the icon (soon: or title) and a popup will appear.
Click on the icon (soon: or title) and a page about the location will open.
-
The screen is cluttered. What can I do?
-
Close folders on the legend by clicking on the folder names (e.g. PLACE).
If "Show popups always" is highlighted, click on it to not do that.
-
The legend is in the way of something I want to see. What can I do?
-
Click on a part of the legend that doesn't have a legend item, and drag
the legend to a different place.
-
I want to see parks without the Burnham layer, but when I close the Burnham
layer the parks layer closes.
-
Open the parks layer separately. It will then stay open when you
close the Burnham layer.
-
What can I do to immortalize myself here?
-
Find the "Talk back" item and show it. Zoom in to where you want
to add a location. Click on the second icon on the "Talk back" item,
then click again where you want to add your own thing. Follow the
instructions on the little page that pops up.
-
Hack into the map and make it show naked people.

Troubleshooting:
-
There's no map or legend or anything, just some words on the screen.
-
Right. Be patient. The map could take two minutes to load the
first time (next time, it should be faster).
-
I see the legend, but moving the cursor around on it has no effect whatsoever.
-
Sometimes the map takes a few seconds to warm up. Not all computers
are warm-blooded, and the temperature difference between your computer
and the one the map is coming from may be great. Be patient.
-
I've tried to show a layer by clicking on a legend item but nothing new
shows up on the map.
-
The layer is still making its way from the Exploratorium
to your computer. There should be a message on the legend: "Waiting
for map." (Soon: The name of the legend whose map is still coming
should be italicized.)
-
Nothing at all is happening and there's an "ERROR" message on the status
bar.
-
My computer has crashed entirely and completely.
-
Profuse apologies. Good thing you printed this out first.
-
The background is a different color than earlier.
-
This is a bug that is very difficult to fix. It seems that many computers
look out the nearest window and attempt (poorly) to use the sky color for
their background. Best to ignore it.
